Digital Dinosaur Leaps Into Real-World Adventure

In collaboration with S!Lab, we aimed to transform the iconic Chrome Dinosaur game into a physical interactive installation during Sun Yat-Sen University’s Sports Days. Our challenge was to create an engaging, accessible experience that would attract participants while maintaining the game’s intuitive appeal in a high-traffic location.

We developed a multi-faceted approach to maximize engagement and participation:

• Leveraged the university’s social media channels for pre-event promotion
  Implemented a competitive leaderboard system to drive repeated engagement
• Designed multiple gameplay mechanics to encourage skill development and strategic discussions
• Incorporated hidden features to create moments of discovery and surprise
• Created an incentive system combining announced prizes with secret rewards

We engineered a sophisticated yet intuitive installation using non-contact detection technology, perfectly suited for the high-traffic elevator entrance area. The system uses webcam detection to translate physical movements into game controls, allowing players to navigate the familiar Chrome Dinosaur through jumps and crouches. The installation features clear instructional videos and maintains the game’s iconic simplicity while adding new dimensions of physical interaction.

The installation significantly exceeded expectations, attracting 3,476 visitors during the event period. The combination of competitive elements and hidden features proved highly effective in driving repeated engagement. The project successfully strengthened brand awareness for both S!Lab and Luxmin while creating a memorable interactive experience that resonated with the university community.

The project demonstrated how strategic placement in high-traffic areas, combined with familiar gaming elements and physical interaction, can create compelling experiences that transcend traditional digital games. The success of the hidden reward system proved that recognizing player dedication can transform casual engagement into passionate participation.
